Slow & Intentional Mornings

To me, the best days start with a slow morning. I grew up in the countryside of Minnesota, where mornings were unhurried and intentional, where you’d watch a soft mist roll over the lakes, step outside, and literally put your bare feet in the grass. There’s something about feeling that connection to the earth every single day, letting the peace of nature seep in, that has always stayed with me.

When I moved to Colorado, the scenery changed, but my desire to feel grounded and connected didn’t. The mountains offer a different kind of beauty, one that’s more dramatic, more rugged, but I knew I needed to create a new routine that brought me that same sense of calm I had back home. After numerous trials and errors, I’ve finally found a morning ritual that makes me feel intentional, present, and ready for the day, all without leaving my home.

Coffee First (Always)

The moment I get up (after a big glass of water), you’ll find me at my coffee bar. It overlooks our side yard and our sweet neighbors, which makes for the perfect moment of peace before the day really begins.

But instead of a traditional black coffee, I make myself an Adaptogen Golden Latte, something that fuels not just my energy, but my body and brain. I’ve played around with recipes over time, but here are my two favorites:

  • Recipe 1: Detox Drink (Adaptogen Twist)
Inspired by Dr. Axe’s Detox Recipe

    • 16oz warm water

    • 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar

    • 2 tbsp lemon juice

    • 1 tsp Adaptogen Golden Milk powder

    • Dash of cayenne (optional—the powder already has black pepper to activate the turmeric)

    • 1 tsp raw honey or maple syrup

Mix everything together and enjoy it warm.

  • Recipe 2: Golden Milk (Dirty Version Optional)

Warm the milk, whisk in the powder, and sweeten to taste.
Make it “dirty” by adding a shot of espresso.

And here’s my real secret ingredient? A cup that makes me happy. Mine literally says “Little Joy” on it, because why not start the day with something that makes you smile?

French Doors & Cozy Chairs

Once my drink is ready, I open the French doors to the backyard and let the morning light spill in. I curl up in a cozy chair where I can feel like I’m outside while still staying wrapped up inside.

It’s in these moments that I’ve had to learn to truly let go. Slow mornings can be the hardest time not to replay yesterday’s mistakes or start worrying about what’s ahead. It’s a practice, one I’ve worked on through podcasts, books, and little reminders to stay in the moment.

Not every morning looks like this. Life gets busy, things come up, and sometimes it’s hard to be as grounded as I’d like. But whenever I can, I come back to this routine, because I know it sets my day up for success. It always takes me back to those peaceful Minnesota mornings, and that’s a feeling worth holding onto.
