Picnic Roots
Humble Beginnings in August 2021
In the heat of a Colorado summer, Payton had an idea: what if we built a portable picnic table, one that could be easily set up in parks or backyards to bring people together? It wasn’t just about eating outdoors. It was about gathering. About creating an intentional moment that pulls people out of their day-to-day routines and into community.
So, with sleeves rolled up and tools in hand, Payton, Amy, and I got to work. It was August of 2021. What started as a Saturday DIY project quickly turned into something so much bigger than wood, screws, and a little elbow grease.
While we didn’t follow any exact plans, we found inspiration in the beautiful work of Ana White, a longtime favorite for DIY ideas and approachable woodworking. Our design came together organically, but her creativity and practical how-tos gave us the confidence to go for it. We love what she does and are so grateful for the spark she helped light.
A Table Made for Gathering
The final product was a light wood table, long enough to seat friends, family, or neighbors, new and old. We decorated it simply, just as we imagined: with white runners, fresh florals, and soft yellow accents. It was the kind of setup that instantly invited you to sit down, breathe deep, and stay awhile.
It wasn’t perfect, but that was kind of the point. It was personal. Handmade. Filled with intention. A physical reminder that you don’t need much to create something meaningful, just a good idea and a few people willing to bring it to life.
From Passion Project to Purpose
The Lavender District has grown and evolved in ways we could’ve never imagined back then. But this picnic table? It was our very first passion project. And even though our mission has deepened over time, the heart of it is still the same: to create spaces (physical or emotional) where people feel seen, supported, and connected.
We believe that community starts with a place to gather, and sometimes, that place is a picnic table you built yourself.
